
The OP XY from Teenage Engineering is one of the most talked about synthesizers and sequencers on the market right now, and for good reason. It packs a synth engine, sampler, sequencer, mixer, and effects into a small aluminum body that fits in a bag. But the first time you pick one up, the layout can feel like a puzzle box. Lots of buttons, four unlabeled knobs, and a workflow that does not look like anything else you have used before.
This guide walks through the hardware itself, button by button and mode by mode, so you can build a mental map of the OP XY before diving into deeper tutorials. Before getting into specifics, it helps to notice that the OP XY groups its buttons into clear sections. Once you see the pattern, the whole interface starts to make a lot more sense. There are groups for communication and settings, groups for sound modules, a row of encoders, eight track buttons, sixteen sequencer buttons, and a two octave keyboard along the bottom.
Keeping that grouping in mind will make everything below click faster.
The ports and power button live on the right side of the unit. The microphone sits in the top right corner, ready for quick sampling whenever inspiration strikes.
Right next to that is the level meter, which is the row of lights on the right side of the device. It shows you audio levels in real time so you know if a sound is too quiet or starting to peak. Handy tip: hold the COM button and that same light row will show you your battery level instead.
The COM button gives you access to four smaller buttons labeled M1 through M4, along with settings for System, Control, Devices, and MTP.
Notice that M1 through M4 always correspond to labeled actions shown right above each button on the screen. This pattern repeats constantly throughout the OP XY, so get used to looking up at the screen to see what each module button currently controls.
The four knobs are called encoders, and Teenage Engineering names them Dark Gray, Mid Gray, Light Gray, and White from left to right. What each encoder controls changes depending on where you are in the interface, so you will see them referenced constantly as you learn different modes. There is no universal function tied to the color of a knob, it is all contextual.
There are eight track buttons. In Instrument mode, these represent your eight instrument tracks. In Auxiliary mode, each button is tied to a fixed function shown by its icon, and those cannot be reassigned. We cover what each auxiliary track does further down.
The sequencer is the heart of what separates the OP XY from earlier Teenage Engineering devices like the OP 1. There are sixteen sequencer buttons, and each one represents a spot where you can place, or program, a note, a group of notes, or a parameter change. A simple way to picture this is four beats of four, which adds up to sixteen steps total. As you program notes, the buttons light up to show exactly where those notes live in the pattern.
The OP XY includes a two octave keyboard laid out like a piano. The top row acts as the black keys, which Teenage Engineering calls accidentals, and each one has a number tied to different use cases you will pick up over time. The bottom row acts as the white keys, called naturals, and the icons printed on them relate to step sequencing components and punch in effects, both of which get their own deep dive later.
The transport section covers Record, Play, Stop, Plus and Minus, and Shift.
Shift and Projects gives you access to your saved projects. This is another spot where the encoders are used to scroll and select on nested screens, which again is a pattern you will see throughout the device.
Tapping the metronome button repeatedly sets your tempo manually by feel. Once you are in the metronome screen, the encoders control:
Instrument mode is where you shape the actual sound of a track.
Auxiliary mode is where the OP XY starts to feel less like a typical synthesizer and more like a full production tool. M1 through M3 behave differently depending on the track, and sometimes do nothing at all on certain tracks. M4 remains an LFO across every aux track.
Here is a quick look at what lives on each auxiliary track:
Arrangement mode is where patterns turn into full songs, and it is honestly the mode with the steepest learning curve on the whole device. Give yourself permission to watch a tutorial on this one more than once.
A pattern is represented by each box across the eight columns, one column per track. The number inside the circle on screen shows which scene you are currently viewing, and a scene is simply the full collection of patterns across all your tracks. It is easy to assume this is a horizontal timeline your song moves through, but it is not. Instead, whatever pattern is selected on each track is what plays for the scene you are currently on.
Scenes let you save a full snapshot of active patterns across all sixteen tracks. Hold Shift and press a number key to save a new scene, and switch between them the same way. If you hold Shift, press Play, then press a scene number, the OP XY queues that scene to start once the current one finishes, instead of cutting over instantly.
Shift plus the Arrangement button takes you into Song mode, where you set the order scenes play in by holding Shift and pressing the corresponding number keys.
Mixer mode covers levels, panning, EQ, compression, and effect sends.
Sample mode lets you record audio from a microphone or any external source, then chop and play it back. M1 records, M2 plays your sample, and M4 deletes it. The encoders control source, channel, gain, and threshold. Press the currently highlighted track to exit sample mode.
Players give you a way to trigger complex rhythms or chords, or hold notes, without playing every note yourself. Shift plus the Players button changes the player type, and each encoder behaves a bit differently depending on which type you choose.
The Bar button is unique because you hold it down and press other buttons to interact with it. Without diving too deep into music theory here, think of Bar as a way to chain multiple sequencer lines together so you can build longer patterns.
By default, Bar is set to one, meaning your sequence plays through a single time. Use Plus and Minus to add or remove bars, and hold Shift while pressing Plus to duplicate the current bar instead of adding a blank one. Press Bar again to switch which bar you are editing.
The Track Scale shown in the top right multiplies your bars. At a setting of one, each bar holds one sequencer line and your pattern plays four bars total. Bump that to two, and each bar now holds two sequencer lines, stretching your pattern out to eight bars.

Every button and encoder combination opens up a huge amount of creative possibility once it clicks, and the fastest way to get there is simply spending time with the device.
